Alcoholism has taken a toll on Puriben’s life. Her husband has been drinking heavily for the past 20 years. Even when household bills remain unpaid, he spends most of the salary he earns as an electrician on alcohol. Under the influence, he has beaten both Puriben and the children, and once he even broke some of Puriben's ribs.
After joining Gramshree in 2000, Puriben and her three daughters now manage to meet all their household expenses, and even save some money every month. In addition to securing financial independence, Puriben has also worked up the courage to leave her drunken husband.
Although her youngest daughter (15) attends school, Puriben wishes that her son (17) would also take up his studies instead of working at a pharmacy to help contribute financially.
As for the future, Puriben dreams for her children the things she never had. She hopes that her youngest children finish their studies and that all her daughters find good husbands, who treat them with respect. After that, she wants to serve others and give back all that she feels she has been granted.
