About Gramshree | Our Guiding Light | A Brief HistorySlum-dwelling women in India
Underprivileged women in India are heavily burdened. Before the rest of the household wakes up, they do the laundry, fill water (often from a distant source) and cook breakfast. Often they eat only after the rest of the family has had their meal and eat from whatever remains, if anything. Many women who contribute financially to the household, leave the house and children in the care of their oldest daughters, or then take the children with them.
Women work long hours in demeaning, dangerous and exploitative environments; they work as rag-pickers or labourers in the construction industry. In the evenings, they have to cook and take care of all unfinished domestic work.
Often discriminated against, these women lack economic and decision-making power in their immediate family and in their community. More often than not, they are the victims of physical and psychological abuse in their own homes.
